Lesson 3: Promotion

As discussed in the page about the Board, when any piece except the King and Gold General enters the opponent’s camp, the pieces have the option of flipping over and promoting. When a piece promotes, its moves change, and it cannot return to its unpromoted state until it is captured. Promotion can happen when a piece enters the opponent’s camp, moves inside the opponent’s camp, or leaves the opponent’s camp. A piece cannot promote without moving.

The Promoted Pawn moves as a Gold General.

Promoted Lance

?? (narikyou) – Promoted Incense

The Promoted Lance moves as a Gold General.

Promoted Knight

The Horse (Promoted Bishop) moves like a bishop and can move one square forwards, backwards, and to the side.

Dragon

?? (ryuuou) – Dragon King

The Dragon (Promoted Rook) moves like a rook and can move one square diagonally.
